History
EAST Records (Elwood Audio Services Transcriptions) was a Melbourne independent studio and label run by Bill Hawtin (Hutgreen). Like most independent studios of the day, part of EAST's business was recording and pressing 'demo' and custom recordings for bands and singers, such as the unreleased Pink Finks acetate "Mercury Blues", pictured above.
The only commerically released single on EAST that we have identified so far is the debut Eighteenth Century Quartet single "The World Goes On" / "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" (EA-5005, July 1964) which was produced by Bill.
EAST also released two LPs. The first, ca. 1964, was the album See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, by renowned folk performer (the late) Trevor Lucas, who subsequently moved to the UK, where he married Fairport Convention lead vocalist Sandy Denny.
The 1966 LP by Melbourne band The Swordsmen was also originally released on EAST; in recent years it has been reissued on CD by Vicious Sloth Collectibles.
